Tesla Model & Trim Year Guide

Easily find your Tesla model, refresh generation and production years in one simple reference chart.

Unlike BMW, Mercedes-Benz, or Porsche, Tesla does not use internal chassis codes. Instead, each model goes through major refresh updates that change the body panels, bumper design, headlight and taillight shape, and overall fitment — while keeping the same model name. This means two cars both called "Model 3" can have completely different bumpers and mounting points depending on which refresh year they were built.

This guide gives you an easy reference for Tesla model generations, refresh names, and the approximate years they were produced. Use this page to confirm your exact build before ordering parts.

Why Tesla Doesn't Use Chassis Codes

Tesla refers to its major exterior updates as a "refresh" rather than a new chassis code. The most well-known refreshes are nicknamed by the community and by Tesla itself:

  • Model 3 "Highland" — the late-2023 refresh with redesigned front and rear bumpers, new headlights and taillights, and updated interior
  • Model Y "Juniper" — the early-2025 Model Y refresh with a new front fascia, light bar, and rear design
  • Model S/X "Plaid" refresh — the 2021 redesign with a new interior, yoke steering wheel, and revised front bumper

Even though the model name stays the same, pre-refresh and post-refresh parts are almost never interchangeable. A front lip designed for a pre-Highland Model 3 will not fit a Highland Model 3. Always confirm your exact build date and refresh generation before ordering exterior parts.

At JL Motoring, all products are listed by exact model and refresh generation to help ensure proper fitment.

Why Refresh Generation Matters When Ordering Parts

Tesla does not change model names between major redesigns the way traditional automakers do. A 2022 Model 3 and a 2024 Model 3 share the same name but have different front and rear bumpers, different headlight and taillight shapes, and different mounting points due to the Highland refresh. The same applies to the Model Y Juniper refresh, and to the Plaid-era updates on Model S and Model X.

When you shop for parts such as carbon fiber front lips, rear diffusers, side skirts, trunk spoilers, and mirror covers, always confirm whether your car is pre-refresh or post-refresh before ordering. This is how we organize our Tesla catalog at JL Motoring to help ensure proper fitment the first time.

You can start browsing by model in our Tesla carbon fiber parts collection, or contact us if you are unsure which generation your car uses.

Not Sure Which Tesla Generation You Have?

The easiest ways to confirm your exact build:

  • VIN decoder — your 17-digit VIN, found on your registration or in the Tesla app under vehicle details, identifies the production batch and model year.
  • Visual check — compare your front bumper and headlight shape to the descriptions above. The Highland Model 3 and Juniper Model Y both have a distinctive full-width light bar that pre-refresh models do not have.
  • Build date — found in the Tesla app under Software > Additional Vehicle Information, or on your original delivery paperwork.

If you're still unsure, contact the JL Motoring team with your model, year, and VIN and we'll confirm the correct fitment before you order.

Tesla Parts FAQ

What is the Model 3 Highland refresh?

The Highland refresh is the nickname for the redesigned Model 3 that began production in late 2023. It features new front and rear bumpers, updated headlights and taillights, ambient interior lighting, and a redesigned center console. Highland-specific aftermarket parts will not fit pre-2023 Model 3 vehicles and vice versa.

What is the Model Y Juniper refresh?

The Juniper refresh is the nickname for the redesigned Model Y that began rolling out in early 2025. It introduced a new front fascia with a full-width light bar, similar in spirit to the Highland Model 3 update, along with a redesigned rear end and updated interior. Pre-refresh and Juniper parts are not interchangeable.

Are Tesla parts interchangeable between pre-refresh and post-refresh models?

No. Exterior parts such as front lips, bumpers, and light-related trim are specific to either the pre-refresh or post-refresh body design. Always confirm your build date and refresh generation before ordering exterior parts.

Is the Tesla Model S or Model X still in production?

Tesla discontinued both the Model S and Model X in May 2026. Parts for existing Model S and Model X vehicles, including Plaid-era refresh models, remain available through JL Motoring.
